Indian batter KL Rahul and fast bowler, Deepak Chahar, are set to make a comeback to the Indian team for the Asia Cup tournament starting at the end of this month.
The duo has been sidelined due to injuries but has recovered in time for the 6-nation tournament. Rahul successfully underwent groin surgery while Chahar recovered from a thigh injury.
“KL Rahul doesn’t need to prove anything. He is a class player. Whenever he plays T20, it is always as a specialist opener and that would continue. Surya and Rishabh are set to play as specialist middle-order batters going forward,” a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
Harshal Patel is also in contention for the pacer slot but he is yet to fully recover from the rib-cage injury. His inclusion is subject to match fitness. As for Chahar, he can return to the fold as a backup option for Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
“Deepak was one of India’s consistent T20 bowlers before he got injured. He deserves a fair chance and also we need a like-for-like back-up for Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Also now that he is coming back, he would beed to play a lot of games to get his rhythm back,” the source further added.
The entire senior group is expected to be available for selection barring late injuries. Jasprit Bumrah and Virat Kohli were rested for the 5-match T20I series against West Indies but should be included in the Asia Cup squad.
