By Jim Calfa: Former unified lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr says he’s returning to the ring at the end of April or early May against a former world champion.

The 29-year-old Kambosos isn’t giving any hints about who his opponent will be, but given that it’s a former world champion, that narrows it down quite a bit.

‘Ferocious’ Kambosos has already turned down Shakur Stevenson, which leaves Joseph ‘Jojo’ Diaz or Jezreel Corrales as the options for his next fight in Sydney, Australia, in April or May.

Of those two, Jojo Diaz is by far the more recognized and the better option for Kambosos to fight if he wants to receive credit from the boxing public for a victory.

Kambosos (20-2, 10 KOs) states 2023 will be a big year for him like last year, but he wants to turn things around after losing his belts against Devin Haney.

Moving down to 130 would be a good option for Kambosos because that weight class is wide open.

“I’m in a position to fight when I want to fight when I’m ready to fight, but the type of person that I am, I’m getting the itch. I want to fight real soon,” said George Kambosos Jr to Fighthype.

“It looks like the end of April or the start of May, I’ll fight. It’ll give me a good period to heal up from the three big fights. Lopez, Haney, and Haney again, all within a year. Within a year, I fought three of them in three big fights, 36 rounds.

“It took a lot to build these fights and a lot of commitments as well. I’m in a position now to fight when I want to fight, but like I said, I’m getting the itch now.

“My team is in really good talks. My promoter Lou DiBella, and my father/manager George Kambosos. I manage myself as well. We’re all in the talks. It’ll be a former world champion. It looks like it could be in Sydney. It could be in Vegas as well. There are a lot of options and possibilities.

“That’s the good thing. I’m still a massive name is still big in the world of boxing. My name is continuously put out there in America. Like you saw today. Wherever I go, it’s madness. I’m very blessed to be in this position. I’m very humbled by it like I said many times,” said Kambosos.
